An older boat needs a cleaning plan—not just a new flush kit

Before investing in remote flushing, assess existing deposits and discuss an initial CFS Cleanaworx treatment delivered with the CAD.

Start with the condition you have

Fitting a convenient flush point does not turn an old cooling circuit into a new one. A history of saltwater use may have left mineral deposits inside components that cannot be assessed from the outside. Before investing in a system, have the condition of the circuit, hoses and heat exchangers reviewed by a qualified marine technician.

For an older boat, Adit Marine recommends discussing an initial CFS Cleanaworx cleaning treatment with the installer rather than assuming routine fresh water will remove established buildup. Whether that treatment is suitable depends on the engine, materials, installation and existing condition.

Give CFS and CAD their correct jobs

CFS descaler is intended to target mineral deposits in compatible cooling systems and heat exchangers. A routine freshwater rinse serves a different purpose: reducing the saltwater left in the circuit after use. The two activities can form part of a maintenance plan, but they are not interchangeable.

The CAD—Chemical Adding Device—fits between the fresh-water hose and flush point. Its pickup tube draws treatment from a container into the flow. It is a delivery device, not a chemical, filter or universal dosing guarantee. The installed system and chemical instructions determine how it should be used.

Agree the treatment before starting

Do not guess a dilution, contact time or operating state from a blog. Follow the current CFS label, safety data sheet and equipment instructions. Ask your technician to confirm material compatibility, protective equipment, containment and disposal requirements. Do not mix cleaning products.

Older components may already have corrosion, thinning walls or deteriorated seals. Cleaning is not a repair for those defects. Inspect before and after treatment, and investigate any leaks or change in operation rather than treating them as normal.

  • Confirm the exact engine and cooling circuit.
  • Record the existing condition and any previous treatments.
  • Check chemical compatibility and the approved treatment procedure.
  • Inspect the system afterwards and keep the service record.

Build the ongoing routine afterwards

Once the circuit has been assessed and any necessary work completed, the remote flush system can make regular care more accessible. Keep inspecting the equipment and follow the maintenance schedule; a convenient connection is not a reason to stop checking below decks.

Ask Adit Marine about a suitable kit, CAD and CFS together. Planning the installation and initial treatment as one conversation is better than buying a valve first and discovering later that the underlying cooling system needs attention.

Key takeaways

  • Fresh-water rinsing and deposit removal are different jobs.
  • Ask about an initial compatible CFS treatment when retrofitting an older boat.
  • The CAD introduces treatment; it is not the cleaning chemical itself.
