Adit Marine

A hose fitting on your sea strainer? Ask your insurer these questions.

A modification to a seawater cooling system deserves proper engineering, installation records and an insurance conversation—not assumptions.

Look at the whole installation

A hose connection added to a sea-strainer lid may look like a simple way to introduce fresh water. The important question is not whether a garden hose fits. It is whether the complete arrangement is suitable for that vessel's raw-water system and has been installed correctly.

Materials, thread compatibility, seals, pressure exposure, hose support and the condition of the strainer all matter. A convenient fitting does not demonstrate that those questions were considered. Nor does the presence of a branded component automatically validate the rest of an installation.

Do not assume either cover or exclusion

We cannot tell from a photograph, fitting type or product name whether your boat is insured. Cover depends on the policy wording, disclosure, circumstances and the insurer's assessment. It would be misleading to say that every improvised flush connection invalidates insurance—or that fitting an Adit Marine system guarantees cover.

Describe the actual modification to your insurer or broker and request written guidance. Keep the response with the installation records. If a marine survey is needed, use a qualified surveyor familiar with the type of vessel and system.

Questions worth putting in writing

Be specific about the component, location and purpose of the modification. A clear description is more useful than asking whether a generic flush system is acceptable.

  • Do I need to disclose this raw-water cooling-system modification?
  • What installation, inspection or survey evidence do you require?
  • Does my policy specify installer qualifications or maintenance obligations?
  • Are there conditions relevant to water ingress or machinery modifications?
  • What records should I retain if the installation is changed?

Choose a documented, purpose-designed approach

Adit Marine's remote flushing range is designed around marine freshwater-flushing applications. Its value should be assessed through the equipment, fitment instructions and support available for your boat—not through an unsupported insurance promise.

If an existing fitting concerns you, have the installation inspected before using it. Never open raw-water plumbing afloat without appropriate isolation and a competent installation plan. Ask the installer to explain the safe operating and shutdown procedure and supply documentation for future owners as well as your insurer.

Key takeaways

  • A hardware-store fitting is not evidence of marine suitability.
  • Have the installation assessed and document what was changed.
  • Only your insurer can confirm how your policy treats the modification.
